As funding from alcohol and drug organization at the federal, state and local level get tighter due to serious government fiscal problems……it is essential to look elsewhere for funding to support your work…..and criminal justice funding is an important option to consider.

Our friends at the Legal Action Center have developed a new toolkit to help providers obtain federal Byrne JAG funds to support alternatives to incarceration (ATI), reentry, and substance use treatment and prevention services. The toolkit, is available at the Legal Action Center website: free on our website.

Questions?: Contact: Mark L. O’Brien Legal Action Center Criminal Justice Policy Associate (202) 544-5478 / mobrien@lac.org

WASHINGTON, DC, March 2, 2011 – The Legal Action Center is pleased to announce the release of a toolkit to help providers obtain federal Byrne JAG funds to support alternatives to incarceration (ATI), reentry, and substance use treatment and prevention services. This toolkit, funded by our partners at the Open Society Foundations, is available free on our website.

With state, federal, and private resources spread thinner than at any time in recent memory, funding for alternatives to incarceration (ATI), reentry services, and substance use treatment and prevention services is limited, and many providers are looking for ways to expand the breadth of funding streams they use to initiate, maintain, expand, or improve these important programs and services.

The federal Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne/JAG), provides formula-based direct funding to state and local governments to address local public safety needs, and may be used to support the aforementioned services. Service providers must partner with their state or local governments to obtain the funding, however, as nongovernmental organizations are ineligible for direct funding from the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

Legal Action Center’s new toolkit provides step-by-step guidance for service providers seeking to encourage their state or local government to use this funding to support their work and to partner with their governments to provide these services. We encourage providers to take advantage of this resource, and to spread the word.
