N.C. Celebrates Recovery from Drug and Alcohol Addiction on the National Scene

Sep 11th, 2009 • Category: News

RecoveryNC is pleased to acknowledge the selection of Kevin R. McDonald, Founder, President and CEO of Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers (TROSA), located in Durham, as this year’s North Carolina Representative to the Arts and Entertainment Television’s The Recovery Project, a multi-faceted, multi-year initiative to raise awareness that addiction to alcohol and drugs is a treatable disease and that recovery is possible.

The Recovery Project features a symbolic walk across the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday, September 12, in partnership with the federal government and several prominent national addiction recovery advocacy organizations.  Representatives selected from each of the 50 states for their dedication to the accessibility of treatment and recovery support services to all Americans suffering from an addiction, must demonstrate their commitment by being in recovery for a minimum of 10 years to qualify for selection.

Kevin McDonald has dedicated the past 25 years of his career to helping persons with an addictive disorder change their lives.  Under his leadership, TROSA has created a variety of business enterprises that function as both educational and job training venues for the more than 300 male and female residents, as well as a source of revenue for the organization.  TROSA’s  in-house picture framing shop is framing Governor Perdue’s Proclamation of September 2009 as “NATIONAL ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY MONTH”, which Kevin will carry with him on Saturday as he marches with an expected 10,000 persons in recovery from addiction across the Brooklyn Bridge. (Please go to www.recoverync.org to view a copy of the Governor’s powerful Proclamation.)

North Carolina’s 2008 representative to The RecoveryProject’s first walk across the Brooklyn Bridge was Joseph A. Martinez, J.D.  Joseph is the Executive Director of FIRST at Blue Ridge, Inc., an 85 bed men’s substance abuse treatment and vocational training center located in the Black Mountain region of North Carolina.  Since the early 1990s Joseph has been a tireless advocate for recovery and an innovative force in the delivery of treatment and recovery support services in a multiple of states.

Joseph continues to be involved in the work of The Recovery Project, and plans to attend this year’s Brooklyn Bridge walk along with Kevin McDonald to represent North Carolina.

Joseph, an active member of the RecoveryNC Standing Committee, has promised to proudly inform the national media who will be present at the New York event that North Carolina is second only to California in its commitment to Recovery Month with a total of 41 Recovery Celebration Events scheduled through out the state this year.
