Our Winter-Spring calendar of professional development offerings has new topics and some updates we’ve offered in the past. All trainings are from 9:00 – 12:15 at Substance Abuse Prevention Services office unless otherwise indicated.
February 1 Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder – FASD Committee of the Mecklenburg County Drug Free Coalition will emphasize the importance of knowledge of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. The training will identify the physical and behavioral characteristics of individuals who are affected by alcohol pre-natally. A review of the life trajectory of affected persons and the importance of intervention during childhood will be addressed.
February 8 Music, Power and Action: Using Music & Video as Powerful Learning Tools With Youth, Eric Rowles
What’s the connection between Akon, Sean Kingston, Gwen Stefani, Wyclef, Shakira, T. Pain, and Cowboy Troy? What’s the connection between movies like Freedom Writers, American Gangster, Surfs Up, PRIDE, and even High School Musical? And most importantly, how can you use over 20 songs and 10 videos in your work with young people? Come to this session ready to laugh, play, and move to the rhythm!
February 22 Cultural Competency in Working with Latinos, Carlos Martinez
Participants will understand the importance of cultural competence in service delivery and gain awareness of how certain stereotypes affect the quality of services. Participants will learn how to more effectively interact with and understand Latino families in Mecklenburg county
February 29 Prescription Drug Abuse, Ernie Kirchin, CMPD
A look at prescription drugs and their abuse by adolescents and adults.
